What is an ideal speed for reading?

mytwocents asked:
I can read about one page of a paperback in a minute. I read while commuting and would like to read faster so that I can finish most of the books that I already have before moving on to the new books I plan to buy.
When I read, I tend to read aloud words mentally and when I read fast it is a bit like someone talking in a hurry. Is there any other way to do this?

I’m an undergraduate student and would like to be able to read faster without reducing my ability to process and comprehend the text. This is not so I can get my work done more quickly but so that I can do additional reading to set texts. Has anyone got any experience, tips or tricks?

What is the key to speed reading?

What if you no longer sub vocalize, is that ok?
yeah…no one else does know! I wonder if I should tell you?
all you have to do…and you’re not going to believe this, is look at the 1st and last letter of every sentence. the key, of course, is that to get from the last letter to the 1st and is you have to go over the others. another method (not as affective) is to look at the 1st and last letter of every word. sounds crazy. but it works.

I can read Bourne Identity in 3 days. Is that slow or average? I can read front page news fairly quickly (I think). I can’t imagine, however, how people like trial lawyers are able to read through documents that are hundreds, even thousands, of pages long and be able to remember every single important detail. Is speed reading part of their training?
